In short

Trend Micro EDR is the XDR for Endpoints sensor in TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security. It is included in the Essentials and Pro tiers and available as an add-on to Core. Endpoint telemetry is investigated in TrendAI Vision One, where XDR sensors for email, networks and cloud can be correlated with it, Security Operations adds Agentic SIEM and Agentic SOAR, and TrendAI offers managed detection and response services.

Trend Micro, TrendAI and Vision One

Trend Micro now markets its enterprise security products under the TrendAI brand; the company is still Trend Micro Incorporated, and many buyers still search for Trend Micro. The endpoint product is TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security, managed from the TrendAI Vision One platform, which TrendAI describes as providing native EDR and XDR across endpoints, servers, email, cloud and networks.

That platform approach matters for detection and response. The agent on each device prevents threats and, with the EDR sensor switched on, sends activity data to Vision One, where it can be searched, correlated with other sensors and acted on from one place.

If you are moving from Apex One or an older Trend Micro product, the same questions apply: which devices need EDR, and who will watch it. Our sister site covers the Trend Micro endpoint security editions from the antivirus side, and our Cloud Security site covers the TrendAI Vision One platform.

Which tier includes EDR

TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security comes in three tiers, each building on the one below. The EDR sensor is called XDR for Endpoints:

CapabilityCoreEssentialsPro
Anti-malware, behaviour monitoring and machine learningYesYesYes
Web reputation, firewall, device and application controlYesYesYes
Data loss prevention and intrusion prevention for laptops and desktopsYesYesYes
XDR for Endpoints (EDR sensor)Add-onIncludedIncluded
Intrusion prevention for servers, integrity monitoring and log inspectionNoNoYes
Container protectionNoNoYes

In practice, Essentials is the tier for user devices when you want detection and response, and Pro is built for servers and workloads. You can run different tiers on different groups under one account, for example Essentials on laptops and Pro on servers.

What the EDR sensor records and how you investigate

XDR for Endpoints watches process, file, registry and network activity on desktops and servers and sends it to the Vision One data lake. From there:

  • Detection models correlate events into incidents rather than a stream of single alerts
  • Search and investigation let an analyst follow an attack across devices and look back through stored activity, which is the basis of threat hunting
  • Response actions such as isolating a device can be taken from the same workbench
  • Forensics, an option that needs XDR for Endpoints, collects evidence from endpoints for investigations and incident response

Searchable history is only as long as the retention you hold, so if you need to look back further for an investigation or an insurer, plan data retention at the start. Our guide to endpoint detection and response explains the general principles.

From EDR to Vision One XDR and Security Operations

The EDR sensor is one of several Vision One sensors. Each is switched on separately, so you correlate only the layers you want:

SensorWhat it watches
XDR for EndpointsProcess, file, registry and network activity on desktops and servers
XDR for EmailEmail messages, threat logs and user behaviour
XDR for NetworksNetwork traffic, including unmanaged devices, using a virtual network sensor
XDR for CloudCloud audit and flow logs

Trend Micro also lists XDR for Identity and XDR for Data. Correlating sensors lets an analyst follow an attack from a phishing email to the laptop it ran on and the server it reached, then isolate the device, block the sender or disable the account. TrendAI groups this under Security Operations, which adds Agentic SIEM for ingesting and keeping native and third-party logs and Agentic SOAR for AI-guided response playbooks. Our extended detection and response guide explains when XDR adds real value.

TrendAI managed detection and response

For organisations without their own security team, TrendAI lists Managed Detection and Response among its Vision One services, adding 24/7 monitoring by TrendAI's analysts to your security operations. Which services fit your estate, and how they are packaged, is confirmed at quote.

For smaller businesses on Trend Micro's per-user Worry-Free range, Worry-Free with Co-Managed XDR is the equivalent route; see our sister site endpointprotection.uk for Worry-Free. Whichever you choose, decide before go-live who the analysts contact and what they may do without asking, such as isolating a laptop out of hours.

How Trend Micro is licensed

TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security is licensed per protected endpoint, with a different rate for each tier, under TrendAI Flex. Vision One works out which package each endpoint is using from the features enabled on it, and only protected devices count. The XDR sensors for email, networks and cloud have their own units: users, monitored throughput or data volume.

Through Forever Systems, Trend Micro can be billed monthly on what you use, with terms confirmed at quote. Licensing detail is on our Trend Micro Endpoint Security licensing and Vision One XDR licensing pages.

Who Trend Micro EDR suits

TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security with EDR fits organisations that:

  • want prevention and EDR on one agent across Windows, macOS and Linux, with strong server protection in the Pro tier
  • plan to add email, network or cloud sensors and investigate everything in one platform
  • are moving from Apex One or another Trend Micro product and want to keep a familiar vendor
  • want SIEM and SOAR from the same platform later, through Security Operations

How Forever Systems helps

We can map your devices to the right tier, switch on the EDR sensor, connect other sensors where they add value, plan data retention and agree with you who acts on incidents, whether your team or TrendAI's managed service. Licence changes and renewals sit on one Forever Systems account.

How Forever Systems helps with endpoint security

We are an independent UK IT and cyber security provider. We supply and support endpoint security from several vendors, so we can recommend what fits your devices, your people and your budget rather than one vendor's answer to everything.

  • Start with what you have: we can review your current antivirus, EDR and Microsoft 365 licences before suggesting anything new
  • Vendor-aware advice on EDR, XDR and managed detection and response, including CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, WatchGuard, Bitdefender, Sophos, Check Point, TrendAI and Cisco
  • Deployment help: planning a rollout, replacing an existing product and setting sensible policies for device control, encryption and patching
  • Policies and compliance: we help you map your controls to Cyber Essentials and the NCSC's device guidance
  • Ongoing support options, such as policy tuning, renewals and regular reviews, agreed and confirmed at quote

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations. Tell us about your devices and we will suggest a sensible next step.

Frequently asked questions

Does Trend Micro have EDR?

Yes. Trend Micro's EDR is the XDR for Endpoints sensor in TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security. It records process, file, registry and network activity and sends it to TrendAI Vision One for detection, investigation and response.

Which Trend Micro tier includes EDR?

The EDR sensor is included in the Essentials and Pro tiers of TrendAI Vision One Endpoint Security, and can be added to Core as XDR for Endpoints.

Is TrendAI the same as Trend Micro?

Yes. Trend Micro now markets its enterprise security products under the TrendAI brand. The company is still Trend Micro Incorporated, and Trend Vision One is now TrendAI Vision One.

What is the difference between Trend Micro EDR and XDR?

EDR is the endpoint sensor. Vision One XDR correlates it with other sensors, such as email, networks and cloud, so an attack that crosses those areas appears as one incident with response actions in each.

Does Trend Micro offer managed detection and response?

Yes. TrendAI lists Managed Detection and Response among its Vision One services, adding 24/7 monitoring by its analysts. Packaging is confirmed at quote.

How much does Trend Micro EDR cost?

It is licensed per protected endpoint under TrendAI Flex, with a rate for each tier. Ask us for a quote and we will size it against your devices.
