Mobile EDR: detection and response for iOS and Android

Endpoint detection and response gives security teams deep visibility into laptops and servers, but traditional EDR has no native view of iOS or Android. Mobile EDR closes that gap, bringing phone and tablet telemetry into the tools analysts already use. Here is what it adds and the options we supply.

In short

Mobile EDR is endpoint detection and response for phones and tablets. Beyond the blocking that mobile threat defence provides, it collects mobile telemetry that security analysts can search, uses it to investigate incidents after the fact, and feeds it into SIEM and XDR platforms, so mobile devices are covered by the same detection and response process as computers.

What mobile EDR is

Endpoint detection and response records what happens on laptops, desktops and servers so analysts can detect attacks, investigate them and respond. Traditional EDR agents were built for Windows, macOS and Linux and, as Lookout puts it, have no native visibility into iOS or Android, so phones and tablets are usually a blind spot in a security team's view.

Mobile EDR extends detection and response to those devices. It builds on mobile threat defence, which detects and blocks threats on the device, and adds what a security operations team needs: telemetry they can hunt through, history for investigations, response actions and integration with the platforms they already run.

Why security teams want mobile telemetry

Phones carry the same email, chat, files and MFA approvals as laptops, and attackers know it. A text message with a phishing link, a malicious app or an exploit against an out-of-date operating system can be the first step in an attack that later moves to company systems.

Without mobile telemetry, an analyst investigating that attack cannot see the mobile part of the story. Mobile EDR gives them:

  • Visibility: device, app and network activity from phones and tablets, alongside data from computers
  • Hunting: the ability to search across the mobile fleet for indicators of compromise, rather than waiting for an alert
  • Investigation: historical data to reconstruct what happened on a device and how an attacker got in
  • Response: actions such as interrogating or quarantining a device, and triggering access restrictions through device management
  • Correlation: mobile detections in the same XDR or SIEM workflow as everything else

For many smaller organisations, mobile threat defence alone is the right level. Mobile EDR earns its place when someone, in-house or through a managed service, actually investigates and hunts for threats.

Lookout Advanced SOC (Mobile EDR)

Lookout's platform includes a module it calls Advanced SOC (Mobile EDR), alongside Mobile AI Security, Social Engineering Protection, AI Visibility and Governance, and Mobile Threat Intelligence. Lookout describes Advanced SOC as giving security teams:

  • Proactive threat hunting on mobile, with access to raw mobile telemetry including web history, location history, USB and Bluetooth connection history and app activity
  • Forensic analysis of prior events, using historical telemetry to reconstruct an attack timeline and find the initial access vector
  • SOC integration with existing SIEM, SOAR and XDR platforms through a streaming API
  • Device interrogation and quarantine, to isolate a compromised device, gather evidence and enforce remediation
  • App intelligence that can be searched across every app in the fleet

We supply Lookout's Essentials and Advanced bundles, and can scope the Advanced SOC module with you; availability and packaging are confirmed at quote. For the core product, see Lookout mobile security on our Cloud Security site and Lookout licensing.

CrowdStrike Falcon for Mobile

CrowdStrike describes Falcon for Mobile as built on CrowdStrike Falcon Insight XDR, with telemetry from mobile devices presented alongside telemetry from traditional endpoints, so investigations can span the whole fleet. For organisations already running CrowdStrike Falcon, that means mobile detections land in the same console analysts use for laptops and servers.

According to CrowdStrike, Falcon for Mobile:

  • Covers iOS and Android devices
  • Detects suspicious activity and links in texts, email, browsers and QR codes, mobile malware, network disruption and jailbroken or rooted devices
  • Maps adversary activity to the MITRE ATT&CK matrices for mobile
  • Provides Zero Trust Assessment device risk scores for iOS and Android
  • Deploys through your existing UEM or MDM, with zero-touch enrolment

We supply Falcon for Mobile as a per-device add-on to a CrowdStrike Falcon bundle; which bundle fits your detection and response needs is confirmed at quote. Licensing detail is on our Falcon for Mobile licensing page.

Rolling out mobile EDR

Mobile EDR is most useful when it is planned as part of your wider detection and response process, not added as another console. A typical rollout:

  1. Decide who will use the data. Agree whether your own security team, a managed service or both will hunt and investigate on mobile, and what they need to see.
  2. Choose the platform. Match the product to your existing EDR or XDR where you can, so mobile detections sit next to everything else.
  3. Agree the privacy model. Decide which telemetry is collected on company and personal devices, and write it into your policy.
  4. Connect device management. Deploy through your MDM with zero-touch enrolment where supported, and agree what happens when a device is high risk.
  5. Integrate with your SIEM or XDR. Route mobile detections into the same alert queues, rules and playbooks as other endpoints.
  6. Pilot, then extend. Start with IT and higher-risk users such as executives and finance staff, then widen once alerts and processes are tuned.

Response on a phone looks different from response on a laptop: containment usually means isolating the device with the tools your product provides and restricting access to company apps and data through device management and conditional access until the device is fixed or replaced. Agree those steps in advance as part of your incident response plan.

Privacy and personal devices

Mobile EDR collects more data than mobile threat defence, so privacy needs particular care, especially on personal devices. Before rolling it out:

  • Check what is collected on each type of device. CrowdStrike's data sheet states that Falcon for Mobile monitors only designated corporate apps and does not monitor personal applications, including text messaging, email or browsing history. Lookout's Advanced SOC telemetry is richer, so decide where it is appropriate.
  • Separate company and personal devices in your policy, and consider whether deeper telemetry belongs only on company-owned phones.
  • Tell staff plainly what is collected and why, in line with your BYOD security policy and UK GDPR transparency duties.
  • Limit access to mobile telemetry to the people who investigate incidents.

How we help

We can help you decide whether mobile threat defence is enough or whether your security team, or the managed service you use, would make real use of mobile EDR. If it is the latter, we can recommend the option that fits your existing EDR and XDR platform, help plan integration with your SIEM and device management, and arrange licensing, with pricing confirmed at quote.

How Forever Systems helps with endpoint security

We are an independent UK IT and cyber security provider. We supply and support endpoint security from several vendors, so we can recommend what fits your devices, your people and your budget rather than one vendor's answer to everything.

  • Start with what you have: we can review your current antivirus, EDR and Microsoft 365 licences before suggesting anything new
  • Vendor-aware advice on EDR, XDR and managed detection and response, including CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, WatchGuard, Bitdefender, Sophos and Check Point Harmony
  • Deployment help: planning a rollout, replacing an existing product and setting sensible policies for device control, encryption and patching
  • Policies and compliance: we help you map your controls to Cyber Essentials and the NCSC's device guidance
  • Ongoing support options, such as policy tuning, renewals and regular reviews, agreed and confirmed at quote

We work with businesses, schools, charities and public sector organisations. Tell us about your devices and we will suggest a sensible next step.

Frequently asked questions

What is mobile EDR?

Mobile EDR is endpoint detection and response for phones and tablets. It collects mobile telemetry that security analysts can search and investigate, supports response actions on the device, and feeds mobile detections into SIEM and XDR platforms alongside data from computers.

What is the difference between mobile EDR and mobile threat defence?

Mobile threat defence detects and blocks threats such as phishing, malicious apps and network attacks on the device. Mobile EDR adds telemetry and tools for security analysts: proactive hunting, forensic investigation of past events and integration with SIEM, SOAR and XDR platforms.

What is Lookout Mobile EDR?

Lookout Mobile EDR is Lookout's Advanced SOC module. Lookout describes it as giving security teams raw mobile telemetry for threat hunting, historical data for forensic analysis, device interrogation and quarantine, and integration with SIEM, SOAR and XDR platforms through a streaming API.

Does CrowdStrike have mobile EDR?

Yes. CrowdStrike Falcon for Mobile brings Falcon detection to iOS and Android. CrowdStrike describes it as built on Falcon Insight XDR, with mobile telemetry presented alongside telemetry from traditional endpoints.

Does mobile EDR read personal messages?

It depends on the product and the device. CrowdStrike states that Falcon for Mobile monitors only designated corporate apps and does not monitor personal texts, email or browsing history. Check what each product collects on company and personal devices before rollout and explain it to staff.
